Rods and cones are types of light-sensitive cells and are located in the retina of the eye. Rods are sensitive only to different intensities of light, and so are able to form a monochrome image to send to the brain, and are most important during night vision or when there is not very much light. Cones, on the other hand, enable us to distinguish the different wavelengths - colours - of light.
